Mephistopheles, also known as Mephisto, is a demon featured in German folklore. He originally appeared in literature as the demon in the Faust legend and has since become a stock character appearing in other works of arts and popular culture.
This depiction of him is in the form of his bust on a tiered plinth. The piece has nice details – his face with long, pointed ears, bushy eyebrows, and a long thin moustache and goatee. His brimmed hat with medallion and feather tilts open to reveal the inkwell.
