This inkstand features Hercules wearing the hide of the Nemean lion, with the lion’s head and paws draped over Hercules’ shoulders. The base is signed “P Sormani – Paris”. (Paul Sormani 1817 – 1877)
The Nemean lion was a monster in Greek mythology that lived at Nemea. Eventually, it was killed by Hercules. Because its golden fur was impervious to attack, it could not be killed with mortals’ weapons. Its claws were sharper than mortals’ swords and could cut through any strong armor.
