This inkwell from the Buffalo Art Crafts Shop features a square shape with a hinged lid, crafted from copper and adorned with enameled decoration. The enamel work predominantly showcases a deep green color, accented with intricate, swirling patterns in red and blue tones. The underside of the inkwell is marked “The Art Crafts Shop” and numbered 1005.
The Buffalo Art Crafts Shop was established around 1902 in Buffalo, New York, by Bernard Carpenter and Otto Heintz. Initially, the shop focused on producing enameled items like this inkwell. However, after a few years, they shifted their focus to silver overlay work and rebranded as the Heintz Art Metal Shop. This shop was part of the broader American Arts and Crafts movement, which emphasized handcraftsmanship and nature-inspired designs as a reaction against industrialization.
