This inkstand features a rich blue enamel surface with gold detailing and red accents. The patterns on the inkstand include intricate floral and bird motifs, as well as small shield-like designs. The central part of the inkstand has a domed lid with a finial top shaped like a leaf, also decorated with blue enamel and gold accents. The base has elaborate engravings including a dragon fighting a lion, knights on horseback, hares, and other animals.
Mappin & Webb
This inkstand is marked Mappin & Webb – a prestigious British silversmith and luxury goods company with a rich history dating back to 1775. Founded by Jonathan Mappin in Sheffield, the company has become synonymous with exquisite craftsmanship and high-quality silverware, jewelry, and luxury items. Over the years, Mappin & Webb has expanded internationally and received Royal Warrants.
Napoleon III and Second Empire Style
The inkstand’s style can be described as “Napoleon III” and “Second Empire”. The Second Empire style, also known as the Napoleon III style, originated in the Second French Empire (1852–1870) and is characterized by its eclectic and opulent designs. This style often incorporates elements from various historical periods, including the Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo, and is known for its elaborate ornamentation and use of luxurious materials.
