Visual and Material Description

  • The Stand: The inkwell sits on a rectangular tray with an elaborate, openwork scroll and foliate border. The base is supported by four integrated feet, each featuring a classical female mask or “mascaron” at the corner.
  • The Well: The central ink reservoir is shaped like a classical pedestal urn. The body of the urn is decorated with embossed floral motifs and vertical ribbing.
  • The Lid: The hinged, domed lid is topped with a heavy, tiered beaded finial. The top surface of the lid is chased with a leaf-like pattern matching the urn’s base.
  • Internal Components: The lid opens to reveal a removable clear glass insert.
  • Material: The piece is made of heavy cast brass with a naturally aged golden-brown patina.
