  • Form and Composition: The inkstand is built on a heavy, rectangular base, resting on four small, fluted bun feet. The edges of the base are profusely decorated with ornate, relief-carved borders featuring floral, foliate, and scroll motifs, typical of a Rococo Revival style.
  • Central Element: At the heart of the inkstand, between the two inkwells, lies a prominent section of intricate open-work brass. This grille-like design features stylized foliate and scroll patterns, forming a symmetrical, almost floral, centerpiece.
  • Inkwells: Two covered inkwells are situated at either end of the central open-work. Each inkwell is an ornate pot with a domed, hinged lid topped with a small finial. Their surfaces are decorated with concentric rings and foliate designs.
  • Pen Rack: Centrally located and highly ornate is a pen rack. This rack is also made of cast brass with scrollwork.
  • Decorative Details: The corners of the base feature satyr-like faces with open mouths.
  • Style: The lavish ornamentation, the blend of classical and fantastical elements, and the strong emphasis on scrollwork and natural forms are highly characteristic of the Rococo Revival style.
