This figural brass inkwell is in the form of a woman wearing a traditional Welsh hat. The tall, stovepipe-style hat was an indispensable part of a woman’s national costume in Wales in the 19th century.
The hat is hinged, opening for access to the inkwell. She wears a shawl around her shoulders. The jug and a tankard held in her hands suggest she is a barmaid.
The same figure exists as a brass bell. These figures may have been souvenirs from Wales.
