The body of this art glass inkwell is round and made of iridescent cranberry red iridescent glass. The glass section has been overlaid with a decorative metal casing – full of sweeping waterlily tendrils. The lilies swirl about with Art Nouveau / Jugendstil lines. The hinged lid is in the form of a Satyr’s head.
This inkwell is attributed to the Austrian / Bohemian manufacturer Stölzle & Sons. Stölzle’s Glass was one of the biggest glass companies in Bohemia. Sometimes it was called Stölzle’s Glass Empire. Carl Anton Stölzle started his glass business in the 1830’s, and it was expanded to many more factories in Bohemia. The Suchenthal factory was the biggest one among his glass factories at the end of the 19th century.
