Description

  • The Form: This inkwell features a heavy, square-based reservoir with distinctive fluted or ribbed corners. The matching domed lid has a swirled texture.
  • The Decoration: It is decorated with a monochrome blue transferware pattern on a white porcelain ground. The motif is a dense, scrolling floral design featuring large blossoms, likely chrysanthemums or peonies, and stylized foliage that covers both the body and the lid.
  • The Hardware: The lid is attached to the porcelain base by a heavy, patinated metal collar and a rear hinge.
  • Internal Condition: The interior of the well and the underside of the lid show significant ink staining and oxidation, indicating it was a well-used functional object.
  • The Underside: The base is unglazed (biscuit) and shows a slight recess.

Origin and Estimated Age

Because it is unmarked, we must rely on the style and manufacturing techniques for identification:

  • Where Made: Likely France). Many French firms produced this square-fluted shape.
  • When Made: Circa 1880–1910. This combination of a ribbed “shell” form and dense floral transferware was highly popular during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras.

The absence of a mark often indicates the piece was intended for a local market or sold through a stationer who did not require a factory stamp, rather than being part of a high-end export line.
