Diminutive in size, this inkwell has a swirled glass body in the style of Baccarat. The hinged, mushroom-shaped lid showcases heavy repoussé sterling in an elaborate, asymmetrical leaf-and-scroll design singularly attributed to the George W. Sheibler Company. The lower left neck band is stamped with the Shiebler winged “S” and the letter “P”. The front band is hand engrave in Italic scipt with the monogram JRB.

George W. Shiebler, New York, garnered a reputation as one of the finest silver manufacturers of the late 19th Century.  He was most noted for his heavily embossed flatware patterns, along with a variety of hollowware and mixed metal designs. Inkwells such as this one are a rare example of the company’s surpassing silverware artistry.
