This vintage desk set, crafted from Bakelite, presents a striking visual with its bold color contrasts and geometric forms. The set, including an inkwell, rocker blotter, and letter opener, embodies the design aesthetics of the Art Deco and Streamline Moderne periods.

Components:

  • Inkwell:
    • Base Color: The base exhibits a swirled or marbled pattern of deep, dark tones, predominantly a black-brown with orange streaks – a pattern reminiscent of tortoiseshell.
    • Lid: The lid is a solid, bright orange or amber tone. The original insert is missing.
  • Rocker Blotter:
    • Blotting Area: The curved section of the rocker blotter is designed to hold blotting paper, allowing for a smooth and even blotting action.
    • Handle: The handle is a distinct square, rectangular bar in the same solid orange or amber color as the inkwell lid.
    • Base Color: The base, like the inkwell base, showcases the swirled/marbled pattern of dark black-brown with orange streaks.
  • Letter Opener:
    • Handle: The handle maintains the solid orange or amber color.
    • Blade: The blade end is in the dark black-brown with the swirled/marbled pattern.

General Characteristics:

  • Material: All pieces are confirmed to be made of Bakelite, evident in the glossy surface and the unique swirled color pattern of the bases.
  • Geometric Forms: The set emphasizes simple geometric shapes – squares, rectangles, and cylinders.
