This riveted brass inkstand was made during the height of the Arts & Crafts movement with distinct Art Nouveau structural influences.

Because Arts & Crafts brassware of this period—particularly pieces crafted in bench workshops across England (such as Birmingham metalworks) and France—was rarely stamped with a maker’s mark, the exact foundry remains unidentified. However, its construction and stylized handles point squarely to European metalworking traditions from the turn of the 20th century.

Detailed Physical Description

  • Form & Structure: The piece features a truncated pyramid silhouette resting on an angled, forward-sloping base. The sloped front, with an integrated pen rest, is trimmed with heavy rivet head detailing.
  • Front Panel & Motif: The focal point is a high-relief cast brass plaque depicting a detailed horse’s head in profile, framed by an inverted horseshoe. Positioned beneath the head is a classic hunt motif featuring a crossed riding crop and a hunting horn.
  • Riveted Construction: Domed, industrial-style brass rivets outline every seam, corner, base, and rim, providing a striking contrast between the rustic structural joinery and the fine relief work on the plaque.
  • Handles & Hardware: Flanking the sides are swooping, openwork handles featuring stylized organic whip-tail cutouts characteristic of Art Nouveau design. Flat-head machine screws secure the handle backplates, consistent with turn-of-the-century assembly methods.
  • Hinged Lid & Interior: The top is capped with a heavy, domed hinged lid with a raised arch handle. The interior houses an original, white ceramic insert with a wide-lipped rim.
  • Back & Base: The back features a dense grid pattern of structural rivets across the brass sheet, while the underside reveals a flat brass floor plate with an aged, natural patina.
