This inkwell is a puzzle. Made of brass in the form of a four-sided trapezoid, fastened at the edges by strapwork held by rivets, and with rolled feet, it has the look of the Arts & Crafts Shop in Buffalo (precursor to the Heintz Art Metal Shop). But impressed on the underside is the Roycroft mark. And then there’s the silver swan decoration applied to the lid – something indicative of Heintz. Perhaps it is not original and was applied later? The inkwell insert is old, but definitely not original to the piece. A puzzlement!
