This Art Nouveau metal inkstand exemplifies the transition between the fluid, organic lines of the late 19th century and the more structured, geometric patterns of the early 20th century.

Detailed Description

  • Form & Base: The inkstand features a wide, shield-shaped or trapezoidal base with out-swept corners. The central portion of the base rises smoothly to meet the integrated inkwell. This serves as a pen tray.
  • Inkwell & Lid: It is a single-well design. The well is topped with a domed, circular hinged lid. It is missing an insert.
  • Decorative Motifs: Floral Swags: The front face is dominated by two symmetrical, deeply cast swags of laurel leaves. These swags are set against a finely stippled background, which creates a textured contrast to the polished upper surface.
    • Geometric “Shoulders”: On either side of the inkwell, the raised extensions feature a rectangular, Greek-key-inspired motif. This geometric touch is characteristic of the “Secessionist” style, a central European variant of Art Nouveau.
  • Material & Finish: The piece is made of cast metal with a bronze finish. The underside shows the hollow cast structure and an aged patina typical of genuine early 20th-century metalwork.

Origin and Age

  • Estimated Age: Circa 1900–1910. The mix of naturalistic swags and emerging geometric patterns places it firmly at the height of the Art Nouveau period, just as it began evolving toward Art Deco.
  • Where it was made: This specific aesthetic—particularly the combination of laurel swags and fretwork—was highly popular in Germany and Austria (Jugendstil).
