Art Nouveau Gilded Maiden Inkstand (c. 1900)

While there are no manufacturer stamps or maker’s marks on the underside, inkstands of this style, material composition, and decorative theme were primarily produced in Western Europe (typically France, Germany, or Austria).

Description

• The Tray Base: Cast from gilded white metal, the tray features a classic Art Nouveau theme: a serene female maiden with deeply sculpted, long flowing hair that dramatically sweeps outward to gracefully form the structural borders and integrated open handles of the pen tray.
• The Floral Accents: To the right of the maiden, beautifully rendered organic poppy or anemone blossoms with detailed stamens emerge from the tray surface, acting as a transition into the inkwell base.
• The Inkwell: A substantial, heavy, clear square-cut glass inkwell sits snugly within a square metal collar attached to the tray.
• The Enameled Lid: The circular metal lid features a molded, stylized, eight-petal floral rosette. Though the champlevé or cloisonné enameling has faded over time, remnants of white and soft green enamel fills remain nestled within the cast channels.
• The Feet: On the reverse side, the tray is supported by three elegantly scrolled, integrated feet that lift the piece slightly off the desk surface.

This combination of organic curves, the “whiplash” hair motif, and mixed materials epitomizes the naturalistic elegance of the Art Nouveau period.
