This double inkstand embodies the Art Nouveau (or Jugendstil) movement, created at the height of the style’s popularity during the turn of the 20th century (circa 1900–1910).

Dating and Origins

  • Period: Circa 1900–1910 (Classic Art Nouveau era).
  • Region of Manufacture: Western Europe—most likely France or Germany (major centers for luxury decorative metalwork, patinated bronze/pewter desk garnitures, and foundry-cast cabinet bronzes during the Belle Époque). Founders and art metal workshops in Paris and Nuremberg/Iserlohn frequently produced dual-patina mixed-media desk sets featuring naturalistic themes and polychrome bronze figures.

Description

  1. The Central Figural Element
  • The Maiden: Perched dramatically at the raised rear crest of the stand is a classically inspired female nude. Rendered in a warm, polished brown-patinated bronze, her hair is tied up in a traditional topknot, and her body is partially draped in fluid, wind-swept fabric. She leans forward with a graceful, introspective posture—her hand raised near her collarbone in a gesture of modesty or contemplation.
  • Symbiosis with Nature: Resting right beside her on the rocky, wave-like crest is a finely detailed butterfly or moth with delicately textured wings, capturing the quintessential Art Nouveau fascination with entomological motifs and ephemeral beauty.
  1. The Tray and Botanical Motifs
  • Material & Finish: The tray base is cast in metal (Britannia metal with an original dark gunmetal patina that has taken on organic wear over time).
  • The Biomorphic Form: The tray sweeps outward in asymmetrical, whiplash (coup de whiplash) curves mimicking wind-blown water or cascading rock formations. Its raised feet are naturally integrated, shaped like gnarled tree roots or branches supporting the basin from beneath.
  • Flora and Fauna Relief: The floor of the pen tray features low-relief chased engravings and repoussé details depicting delicate stems, floating lily pads, blossoms, and a large, intricately detailed dragonfly resting among aquatic foliage. A blossoming flowerhead anchors the front center rim, balancing the vertical thrust of the maiden at the back.
  1. The Inkwells
  • The Artichoke / Bud Design: Flanking the central basin are two matching inkwells fashioned as stylized artichoke flower buds (or swelling seed pods).
  • Functionality: Each pod features segmented, overlapping petal lids hinged at the back, designed to lift open to access the ink within. The textural contrast between the bulbous, ribbed seed heads and the smooth, flowing tray exemplifies the era’s dedication to turning functional office items into miniature works of sculptural art.
