An Art Nouveau desk set featuring two matching cut-crystal square inkwells with faceted hinged lids. Set upon a stamped brass tray decorated with stylized botanical clusters and flowing whiplash motifs. Designed with a mechanical retaining system utilizing front knurled brass thumbscrews to firmly clamp each crystal well into place. Unmarked.
Description
- Tray & Metalwork: The base consists of a pressed or stamped brass tray with integrated flared handles. The borders feature distinctive Art Nouveau whiplash curves and stylized, relief-embossed organic flora (resembling snowberry or mistletoe clusters/buds) flowing along the edges.
- Inkwells & Glass: It houses two brilliant cut-crystal inkwells. Each block inkwell features deep geometric multi-faceted cutting with chamfered edges. They are fitted with brass collar mounts and faceted cut-crystal hinged lids set into brass surrounds.
- Mechanical Retaining System: The tray is engineered with two square cutouts to cradle the wells securely. The defining technical feature is the clamping mechanism: each well is held by a fixed rear brass post and secured at the front by a threaded brass screw clamp/holder. Turning the knurled brass thumbscrew advances or retracts the front catch, locking the crystal block tightly in place without risking stress fractures to the glass.
- Underside: The back of the brass tray reveals clean stamping contours around the central cutouts and standard soldering points for the screw mounts, characteristic of early batch-manufactured brassware.
Attribution & Origin
- Where was it made? Continental Europe, most likely Germany, Austria (Austro-Hungarian Empire), or France.
- Who made it? Because it is unmarked, an exact foundry cannot be definitively named. However, unsigned stamped brassware with heavy cut-crystal inserts of this exact style was widely produced by prominent German and Austrian metal manufacturers during the Jugendstil/Secessionist movement (such as WMF, C.Deffner, or Austrian brass foundries exporting across Europe).
- When was it made? c. 1895–1910 The combination of strict geometric cut crystal (foreshadowing Art Deco) and sinuous floral whiplash brass handles places it firmly at the height of the Art Nouveau period.
