This inkstand is a single molded piece with a streamlined, rectangular form and rounded ends. It is made from a thermosetting plastic, Catalin, a type of phenolic resin known for its translucent and vibrant colors.

  • Color and Texture: The inkstand has a bright, sunny yellow color that is typical of Catalin. The surface is smooth and polished, and the color has a slight translucence when held up to a light source.
  • Functionality: It is a double inkstand with a built-in pen holder. There are two circular covers that lift off to access the inkwells. Inside, a blue insert with a funnel-like opening serves to access the ink, a design intended to make it easy to fill a pen without spilling. Two small holes between the wells are designed to hold pens.

Maker and Age

  • Manufacturer and Origin: While there are no visible marks to identify a specific manufacturer, the material and design are strongly indicative of a mid-20th century American producer. Companies like American Catalin Corporation (the maker of Catalin plastic) and a host of others produced desk accessories in this style.
  • Approximate Age: The style of the inkstand, with its clean lines and use of a modern material, is characteristic of the Art Deco and streamline moderne periods. It was likely produced sometime between the 1930s and 1950s, a time when Catalin and similar plastics were widely used for colorful and functional household objects.
