Description
- Form & Layout: This is a single-well inkstand (or standish) featuring an integrated pen tray that sweeps horizontally across the base.
- The Inkwell & Lid: The ink reservoir is housed in an elevated, faceted/geometric turret behind the pen trough. It features a hinged lid.
- Insert: It retains its original removable white milk glass insert (or liner).
- Materials & Finish: The piece is crafted from a base metal with a brass-plated finish. Over time, the plating has developed a warm, mottled golden patina with areas of wear and minor oxidation that reveal the darker base underneath.
Art Deco
It is strongly representative of the Art Deco style. While transitional pieces sometimes blur lines, this design exhibits key hallmarks of 1920s and 1930s modernist design:
- Geometrics: The faceted, angular shaping of the inkwell housing, lid, and the crisp, clean lines of the pen channel steer far away from the flowing, organic, whiplash curves typical of the earlier Art Nouveau period.
- Streamlining: The sleek, aerodynamic silhouette and stylized contours reflect the machine-age aesthetic popular during the interwar period.
Where was it made & Who made it?
- Maker: Without a visible maker’s mark, hallmark, or foundry stamp on the rough underside, it is difficult to attribute it definitively to a specific manufacturer. Desk sets and inkstands of this style were widely produced by various metalworking foundries and tabletop accessory makers in the United States and Europe (such as England and Germany) during the early-to-mid 20th century.
- Origin: Mass-produced brass-plated and cast stationery accessories of this caliber were commonly manufactured in industrial hardware and decorative metal hubs—frequently associated with American metalwork companies (or European equivalents) catering to the office and home library market.
When was it made?
Based on the geometric styling, manufacturing technique, and prevalence of similar desk wares, this inkstand dates to the Art Deco period, roughly circa 1920s to 1930s.
