Earliest patented inkstand for which a patent copy exists in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), dated 11/23/1818. The patent deals with a technique for lining a cast iron vessel with blown glass for vitrification and for forming the remainder of the quill sockets. The USPTO erroneously dropped the ‘y’ in Hayward’s name in the bulk of their subsequent records. The hand written patent text was never microfiched, microfiche being the source of the USPTO on-line records. A Xerox copy of the barely readable hand written patent text at the USPTO has been obtained, and is included with the other USPTO Hayward patent materials herein. See U.S. Patent materials US0X0003029. An interpretation of this patent is available ( See U.S.0X0003029 interpretation ).
