Description of the Nickel Silver Inkstand

  • Material: The inkstand is made of nickel silver (also known as German silver or Alpaca). This is an alloy of copper, nickel, and often zinc, which has a silvery appearance but contains no actual silver. Its designation as “NS” on the bottom confirms this material. Nickel silver was a popular choice for decorative and utilitarian items due to its durability, resistance to corrosion, and ability to be polished to a bright, silvery luster, offering an affordable alternative to sterling silver.
  • Form and Design: The inkstand has a rectangular or oblong base with gently curved or shaped edges, giving it an elegant and understated profile. The design is clean and functional.
  • Inkwell: Positioned in the middle, towards the back of the base, the inkwell has a hinged lid and its original glass insert.
  • Pen Tray: A prominent and practical feature is the large pen tray in the front of the inkwell. This elongated, shallow depression is designed to hold multiple pens.
  • Swedish Inscription: The inkstand is marked with a Swedish inscription “pa 25 arsdagen” meaning “on the 25th anniversary” or “on the 25-year anniversary.”
  • Origin: Given the clear Swedish inscription “pa 25 arsdagen” on the inkstand, it is highly probable that this inkstand was made in Sweden. Swedish manufacturers regularly produced items in nickel silver, and the inscription makes a compelling case for its origin.
