This Victorian brass inkstand by James Cartland & Son of Birmingham features intricate brass strapwork that contrasts with its darker patinated finish, giving it the appearance of tarnished bronze. Designed in the manner of an ancient, crested helmet, this inkwell boasts a hinged lid that opens to reveal a cobalt blue glass liner. The body of the inkwell is adorned with elaborate casting details, including dragon motifs and a man’s face set against a backdrop of scrolling foliate designs. The helmet is crowned with a well-cast winged dragon. This dragon crest is reminiscent of the burgonet helmets from the Medieval period.
