This inkwell incorporates multiple figures into a single design, creating an optical illusion. At first glance, it appears to be a chicken with its head raised and tail feathers spread out. But upon closer inspection, the body of the chicken transforms into the head of Dionysus (Greek god of wine) or Bacchus (his Roman counterpart). The back of the chicken morphs into the head of a ram, complete with detailed curved horns and fur texture. The tail feathers of the chicken double as hay or grass, which the ram appears to be eating. The inkwell is mounted on a two-tiered black pedestal base.
