This Japanese inkwell, crafted from brass and copper, is designed to resemble a barrel brimming with marine life. The barrel’s surface is adorned with intricate, high-relief depictions of fish and crustaceans. A crab and snail are skillfully attached to the exterior. The hinged lid of the inkwell features an overflowing tableau of aquatic creatures including fish, crab, an octopus, and lobster. The scales, textures, and forms of marine life are finely crafted.
