The central urn-shaped inkwell with a bronze lid features hand-painted pheasants positioned in a flower garden. Surrounding the porcelain inkwell is an elaborately painted wooden platform with bronze butterfly-shaped pen holders. The painted platform scene depicts beautifully costumed Chinese women bartering the price of colorful caged birds. All the characters, animals, and botanicals are hand-painted against a serene sage green background.
