This brass inkstand in the form of a steam engine was modeled after the English locomotive named “Alexandra”. The center of the inkstand is hinged, opening to a storage compartment for stamps, nibs, etc. Lift the steam dome to access the inkwell. The wheels on the inkstand are moveable.
The “Alexandra” was a Dublin-built tank locomotive in 1851, and is said to have received the name “Alexandra” when it conveyed the Prince and Princess of Wales to Dublin in 1865. The Danish-born Princess Alexandra quickly won hearts on her trip to Dublin. She gazed at rain soaked sites, listened to speeches, and visited orphanages and schools. Alexandra College in Dublin is named for her. She also supported local industry, wearing Irish-made poplin.
