Origin England

Measuring 2 ¼” x 1 ¾” x 2” high

This cut glass and sterling silver inkwell is oval with a flat base. The lower part of the body is line cut and the upper part is star cut. The hinged silver lid has a patterned rim and plain center giving a daisy-like appearance.

The inkwell was made in Birmingham by silversmith Henry Matthews and dates to 1901. Henry Matthews registered his mark in 1893 and ran his firm from premises in Vittoria Street in Birmingham’s famous Jewelry Quarter. He made a very wide range of good quality silverware and remained in business up until around 1930.

The hallmarks, on the outside of the collar and the underside of the lid, are well struck and clear to read. They show the HM maker’s mark for Henry Matthews, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the lion passant for sterling silver, and the date letter b for 1901.
