Description

This advertising inkstand cast in brass features prominent branding for Fernet-Branca.

  • The Base: The inkstand is shaped on a wide, teardrop or ovoid platform with an integrated pen rest trough running across the front, directly above which the brand name “FERNET-BRANCA” is boldly cast in raised, capitalized sans-serif lettering. The outer perimeter of the base is detailed with a decorative beaded or dotted border and two rounded foot/terminal points on either side.
  • The Inkwell Well & Lid: Centered on the upper portion of the base is a fluted, pillar-shaped cylindrical ink reservoir. It is topped by a hinged lid adorned with an embossed/relief design depicting the iconic Fratelli Branca eagle-over-globe logo (the globe clasped in the eagle’s talons beneath a streaming banner).
  • Dimensions: The inkstand is approximately 5 ¾” wide at its broadest point.
  • Underside: The base features a dark, protective lacquer or painted finish typical of period metalwork.

Origin: Where and When It Was Made

  • Manufacturer & Location: Items of this nature—promotional and advertising barware or desktop accessories—were produced for Fratelli Branca to promote their amaro globally. While the company is headquartered in Milan, Italy, promotional brass and bronze desk items and ashtrays of this style were frequently manufactured in Europe (often in Italy or Germany) by metal foundries specializing in promotional advertising novelties.
  • Dating: Stylistically, the combination of classical architectural fluting on the inkwell well, the relief-molded emblem, and the lettering typography point to the late 19th to early 20th century (circa 1890s–1920s), a golden era for European Art Nouveau advertising memorabilia.

History of Fernet-Branca

  • Creation (1845): Fernet-Branca was first formulated in 1845 in Milan, Italy, by Bernardino Branca, a self-taught herbalist.
  • The Secret Recipe: Branca created the amaro as a medicinal tonic and digestive aid. The proprietary recipe remains a closely guarded secret, incorporating dozens of herbs, roots, spices, and botanicals (such as aloe, gentian, rhubarb, and saffron) sourced from four continents.
  • Global Expansion and Marketing: Bernardino and his sons (forming Fratelli Branca Distillerie) aggressively marketed the elixir across Europe and beyond. They employed striking visual advertising—including posters, branded barware, ceramic trays, and desk accessories like this inkstand—to cement the brand in cafés, pharmacies, and offices.
  • Legacy: Today, Fernet-Branca remains the benchmark global amaro, renowned both for its historical roots as a restorative tonic and its enduring popularity in modern mixology.
