Manufacturer Gouda
Origin Netherlands
Date or Era circa 1910

This piece is an authentic Dutch Art Nouveau/Arts & Crafts pottery inkwell, manufactured in Gouda, Netherlands, specifically imported and retailed by Liberty & Co. of London.

Maker & Origin

  • Manufacturer: Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland (PZH), the primary and most famous Gouda pottery factory.
  • Retailer: Liberty & Co. of London. Liberty imported fine Gouda wares directly from PZH before World War I disrupted their trade around 1914.
  • Origin: Gouda, Netherlands.

Date of Production

  • Date Range: Circa 1900–1914.
  • Key Indicators: Liberty’s importation of PZH Gouda pottery peaked during this pre-WWI period. The execution features early high-gloss/semi-matte textured lead glazes, which predates the matte-finish mat-k loof glazes that became standard after 1910–1920.

Detailed Description & Analysis

  • Form & Structure: A three-part cylindrical inkwell featuring an outer decorative casing with a flared rim and foot, a fitted ceramic inner ink reservoir, and a fitted domed lid topped with a rounded finial knob.
  • Decoration Style: Influenced heavily by the British Arts & Crafts movement and Dutch Art Nouveau (Nieuwe Kunst). The upper collar features repeating geometric arch motifs with terracotta-red discs, while the lower body exhibits a mottled, crystalline-like textured glaze with deep blues, greens, ochre yellow, and earth tones.
  • Markings Analysis:
    • “LIBERTY & CO.” & “MADE IN HOLLAND” – Hand-painted in cobalt blue underneath the removable insert/reservoir, confirming its retail origins at Liberty’s Regent Street store in London.
    • “J.N.” – The painter/decorator’s initials. While often attributed to decorator Jan Nuvelsteyn, PZH decorators used initial stamps/monograms to identify individual piecework hand-painters.
    • Base Model/Shape Stamp: The underside of the outer body displays impressed/incised shape numbers (e.g., 0940 or similar factory model codes).
