Description
This sterling silver and cut-crystal inkstand has a distinctive Arts & Crafts / Art Nouveau influence:
- Tray Base: A circular, pierced tray supported on three rounded ball feet. It features an intricate pierced ring of openwork arches and a recessed central well designed to secure the inkwell.
- Rack Structure: A minimalist, branch-like wire framework fixed to the rear rim that functions as a double-rest rack for dip pens.
- Inkwell: A spherical, heavy glass inkwell cut with a honeycomb facet pattern. It is fitted with a hinged, smooth sterling silver collar and a cap.
Deciphering the Hallmarks
The marks stamped on both the collar and tray confirm this item is English sterling silver, assayed in Birmingham in 1903.
- Maker’s Mark (G&S Co Ltd): Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co. Ltd., prominent London retailers and manufacturing silversmiths based at 112 Regent Street.
- Lion Passant: The official British standard mark certifying .925 Sterling Silver.
- Anchor: The town mark for the Birmingham Assay Office.
- Date Letter (d): The lowercase Gothic letter “d” in a shaped cartouche corresponds to the year 1903.
