Cast Brass Apple & Leaf Figural Inkwell (c.1889)

Description

• Form & Subject: A late-Victorian cast-brass novelty inkwell modeled as a life-sized apple nestled on a sprig of naturalistic leaves and a short branch.
• Hinged Lid: The top half of the apple is hinged along a naturalistic, curved seam line, secured at the rear by a twin-knuckle exterior hinge. When closed, the seam blends into the organic contours of the fruit.
• Interior & Reservoir: Lifting the lid reveals a flush, circular brass platform that holds a removable clear glass insert.
• Base & Construction: The leafy base acts as a stable desk stand, cast with detailed leaf veining and organic curling edges. The body of the apple is secured to the leaf base from the underside with threaded machine screws.
• Material & Condition: Cast brass featuring an aged warm patina, natural high-point polish, and light surface oxidation and casting remnants on the underside.
