This sterling silver capstan inkwell is characterized by its sturdy, minimalist silhouette.
Design and Form
The inkwell features a characteristic “capstan” shape, with a wide, flat circular base that tapers gracefully toward a central raised neck. This low-profile design ensures exceptional stability on a writing surface. The entire piece is finished with a high mirror polish that highlights its clean, uncluttered lines.
Features and Construction
- Lid and Hinge: The top is fitted with a simple, domed hinged lid that operates on a sturdy, integrated hinge mechanism.
- Ink Reservoir: When opened, the lid reveals the interior well with a removable clear glass liner insert.
- Stability: As is typical for this style, the base is weighted to provide a substantial feel and prevent tipping during use.
Hallmarks and Provenance
The piece is fully and clearly hallmarked in two locations: on the vertical rim of the base and on the interior of the lid. These marks confirm its origin and quality:
- Maker: The “W.H” maker’s mark identifies the piece as the work of William Hutton and Sons, a renowned firm of silversmiths.
- Assay Office: The anchor symbol indicates it was assayed in Birmingham.
- Purity: The lion passant confirms it is Sterling silver.
- Date: The lowercase “o” date letter dates the piece specifically to 1913.
