This is an unusual inkstand made from animal horn, likely designed for a gentleman’s library or a study.
Identification of the Horn
The horn is almost certainly a polished bovine horn (cow, bull, or steer). Its distinct curvature, tapering from a wide base to a sharp point, and the natural yellowish-tan color with dark, smoky marbling are classic characteristics of this material. During the late 19th century, natural materials were frequently repurposed into functional desktop accessories to bring a rugged, “naturalist” aesthetic indoors.
Metalwork and Features
- The Stand: The piece is supported by a wire frame. The frame features dramatic, elegant scrollwork that provides stability and lifts the horn off the desk surface.
- The Inkwell: The inkwell is mounted centrally on the horn’s curve. It features a hinged, circular lid that opens to reveal the reservoir.
- Pen Rest: There are holders designed to cradle a dip pen horizontally. One hook is integrated into the front metal band near the horn’s tip, and another sits further back.
Origin and Age
- Origin: This style of “taxidermy decor” was popular in Great Britain and Germany. The style of the scrollwork and the use of silverplate on natural horn strongly suggest a European origin.
- Age: Based on the construction and the popularity of this aesthetic, the piece likely dates to between 1880 and 1915.
