The natural shape of this hand-carved inkwell is a burl nodule. The artist sliced the top off the nodule and reattached it at the back with two brass hinges. On the side is carved a pen rest, plus two carvings of a man and woman talking to each other, while staring into each other’s eyes. The bold shiny finish is original – perhaps several coats of orange shellac. The artist used the graining of the burl to create the hair.
