Identification & Maker
Based on the distinctive design, this piece was manufactured by Benedict Art Studio (also known as Benedict Studios) of East Syracuse, New York.
While this piece is unmarked, this is common for Benedict’s copper line. Some examples from this series were marked with a diamond shape containing a “B” and a bee, often labeled under their “Handcraft” brand, but a large portion of their production left the studio with only a paper label or no mark at all.
Specific Details
- Pattern: The “Grape” motif was one of Benedict’s most popular repoussé designs during the height of the Mission/Arts & Crafts movement.
- Design Elements: The square, flared form with scalloped or “wavy” edges on the base and the lid is a hallmark of Benedict’s work from this era.
- Glass Inkwell: The thick, square clear-to-light-green glass inkwell is the original style of insert used by the studio.
- Date: It was made circa 1905–1915.
