A cast iron inkstand holds two inkwells and a utility cup. Attached to the base is a large horseshoe-shaped pen rack which frames a combination clock / calendar. The base is marked “N.M.S. NY, No. 202 A & B”.

The combination clock / calendar has 31 Arabic numerals for the days of the month on the outer ring. The 30-hour clock has Roman numerals along with a small hourly indicator. The clock shows a patent date of Oct 29, 1878.
