This English Burr Walnut writing slope is a masterclass in mid-19th-century woodenware. Compact and sophisticated, the piece features a rich, swirling grain complemented by intricate Rosewood and Boxwood cross-banding. Its diminutive size and delicate Mother of Pearl cartouche and escutcheon suggest it was originally commissioned for a lady’s use during her travels.

Exterior & Construction

  • Material: High-quality Burr Walnut veneer with multi-wood inlays.
  • Hardware: Features an original brass lock and is accompanied by its original working key.
  • Condition: Excellent vintage condition; the hinges are secure, and the mechanical elements function perfectly.

Interior Features

The interior reveals a well-appointed writing station with a green leather (skiver) writing surface adorned with classic gold-leaf tooling. The upper storage area is thoughtfully organized, containing:

  • A cupped, rocking pen rest with additional storage hidden beneath.
  • A dedicated stamp slope.
  • A period-correct glass inkwell with a polished brass cap.

The Secret Compartment

The true “pièce de résistance” is the hidden drawer system. By gently lifting the partition adjacent to the inkwell, a spring-loaded secret panel is released. This reveals two miniature secret drawers; each finished in Burr Walnut veneer and fitted with delicate white bone knobs.
