This silver-plated inkstand features a figural golfer in mid-swing. This specific style was a popular luxury item during the “golfing boom” of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Description

The set consists of a rectangular, stepped base with cut corners, supported by four ball feet.

  • The Golfer: A finely detailed figure of a man in traditional period attire – sweater, and “plus-fours” (knickerbockers)—captured at the peak of his follow-through.
  • The Inkwell: A heavy, square cut-glass reservoir with a central well. It sits securely within a decorative scrollwork frame.
  • The Lid: A matching silver-plated hinged lid with a small ball finial.
  • Pen Rests: The scrollwork frame for the inkwell and the decorative supports near the golfer’s feet double as rests for a dip pen.

Origin and Manufacturer

Based on the design, construction, and the specific “scroll” style of the pen rests, this inkstand was likely made in England, specifically in Sheffield or Birmingham. These cities were the world centers for high-quality silver plate (often “Electroplate on Nickel Silver” or EPNS).

Age

This piece dates to the early 20th century, specifically between 1900 and 1915.

  • The golfer’s clothing (plus-fours and the specific style of his swing) is quintessential for the Edwardian period.
  • The heavy, blocky cut-glass inkwell is also a hallmark of desk sets from this specific 15-year window.
