This cast metal inkstand, signed and dated “B. Bulcke 1902”, is an example of the Art Nouveau period’s focus on the female form and organic, flowing lines.

Description

  • The Figure: The centerpiece of the stand is a partial figure of a woman, shown from the waist up. She is depicted in a reclining or semi-recumbent pose, with her head tilted back and her hair flowing into the surrounding design.
  • Clothing: Her torso is covered by a delicate, draped dress. The fabric of this garment flows downward and outward from her body, seamlessly transitioning into the base of the piece.
  • The Inkwell: The inkwell is situated on the base directly next to the woman’s head and upper body.
  • The Pen Tray: The front section of the base, formed by the “folds” of the woman’s flowing dress and hair, creates a wide, shallow pen tray.
  • Material: The stand is made of cast metal with a bronze finish.

The Artist: Basile Bulcke

The signature and date, located on the rocky edge of the base, confirm this as a work by Basile Bulcke (1851–1936) from the year 1902.

  • Style: This piece captures the “whiplash” curves and organic fusion typical of the Belgian school of Art Nouveau.
  • Artistic Approach: Bulcke was known for integrating human figures into functional objects so that the utility (the inkwell and pen tray) became an inseparable part of the sculpture’s natural landscape.
