  1. Visual Description
  • Design: The stand features a bold, geometric design. The central feature is a raised, semi-circular back panel depicting a Roman Chariot Scene (charioteer driving horses) in relief. This classical motif was often stylized in the 1920s to represent speed and modernity.
  • Form: It is a double inkstand with two square inkwells flanking the central panel. The wells have hinged pyramid-shaped lids. The front forms a wide, curved pen tray.
  • Material: It is made of sheet brass pressed into shape. The underside reveals the hollow construction typical of mass-produced metalware from this period.
  1. The Mark: “GERMANY”
  • Origin: The simple stamp “GERMANY” on the underside of the ink cup indicates it was made for export. Under the US McKinley Tariff Act of 1890, imported goods had to be marked with their country of origin.
  • Timeframe: This specific block-letter style is typical of German exports between 1900 and 1939.
