Description of the Brass Inkwell
- Material: The entire piece, including the base and the body of the inkwell, is constructed of cast brass.
- Base: The base is square and stepped with a molded design.
- Pen Channels: Integrated into the base on all four sides are shallow pen channels, designed to hold a dip pen.
- Feet: The base rests on four small, molded feet at the corners.
- Inkwell Body: The central body holding the ink liner is cylindrical, secured to the base. It is topped with a domed lid. The lid is hinged and features a finial on top.
- Liner: When the hinged lid is opened, it reveals a removable white “milk glass” insert (liner).
Age and Style
- Style: The clean lines, geometric steps, and emphasis on rectangular forms place this piece in the period that bridges the transition from ornate Victorian styles to the more restrained aesthetics of the Edwardian era and early Art Deco/Mission style (c. 1890–1920). It exhibits a simple, functional elegance.
