This is a stylish single inkstand, likely dating from the Art Deco period (c. 1920s–1930s), characterized by strong geometric forms and contrasting materials.
Key Decorative Feature: The Rayed Base
The most distinctive Art Deco element is the pattern surrounding the glass inkwell opening:
- Tapering/Stepped Rays: A series of recessed lines, or rays, emanate symmetrically from the perimeter of the square glass holder and extend towards the outer edge of the brass base. These rays are often described as stepped (having a tiered or angular profile) or tapering (narrowing as they radiate outward).
- Art Deco Significance: This motif is known as the sunburst, ray, or stepped motif, which was exceptionally popular in Art Deco design. It symbolizes speed, modernity, and the dazzling light of the new age, giving the stationary inkstand a subtle, dynamic energy. The contrasting surface (recessed rays vs. raised frame) highlights the strong geometry.
