Bronze Inkstand with Griffins

  • Material & Style: Cast in bronze, the inkstand features elaborate scrollwork, floral motifs, and high-relief carvings.
  • Inkwells: Two symmetrical hinged-lid inkwells sit on either side of a central tray. One retains its glass insert.
  • Mythical Figures: At each end are winged creatures—likely griffins, given their leonine bodies and eagle-like wings. Griffins were popular in Victorian and Art Nouveau design, symbolizing guardianship, strength, and wisdom.
  •  The Maker’s Mark: Overlapping “A” and “R”: The intertwined “AR” monogram is crisply incised on the underside and likely represents the maker or foundry. Unfortunately, it doesn’t match any widely documented marks from major European or American manufacturers.
