Historical Context and Jas. Scott & Son

Jas. Scott & Son (formally incorporated as James A. Scott & Son, Inc. in 1923 and now known as Scott Insurance) was founded in Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1864 and specialized in insurance and financial services. The presentation to W.H. Cunningham by the “Foremen & Office Staff” was from a professional firm. It was a token of appreciation from his colleagues, a common practice in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods to commemorate a milestone, a retirement, or a departure.
