Based on an episode in Charles Dickens’ Pickwick Papers, this inkstand depicts Mr. Winkle, an inept sportsman with a rifle, Mr. Pickwick, a wounded Mr. Tupman, and other characters in this forest scene.  The inkwell is found in the board covered well (missing insert). The basket stored nibs, wafers, etc.

The bottom is marked with “RoNo” in a triangle with the numbers 616 593 – perhaps a registration number?
