This nautical-themed inkstand captures the spirit of maritime life. The inkstand is “anchored” by a large, three-dimensional anchor at the center-back of the piece. The anchor is the focal point, with its rope coiled around the stock. Two glass inkwells with hinged lids are placed in front of the anchor, completing the functional aspects of the stand.
The base is rich with specific maritime details:
- Flags and Pennants: A series of triangular flags and a long pennant are draped around the top portion of the anchor and its rope. These flags appear to be signal flags, which were used for communication between ships.
- Coiled Rope: The base of the stand is adorned with a meticulously sculpted coiled rope, providing a border for the entire scene and adding to the nautical feel.
- Lifesaver Ring: A circular object resembling a lifesaver ring is visible at the very back of the base, resting against the anchor.
- Rigging and Chains: The anchor’s rope has an intricate texture, and a chain runs along the base, adding to the illusion of a ship’s deck.
