This is a ceramic double inkstand from the Sarreguemines factory, made in the whimsical shape of a miniature sofa or settee.
- Form and Finish: The inkstand has a sculpted form with a high, curved back and rolled arms, mimicking tufted upholstery. It is finished in a single, solid deep, glossy green glaze. The “seat” of the sofa contains two openings for inkwells and a central trough for nibs.
- Markings: The underside is stamped “SARREGUEMINES FRANCE” along with 531 PBv 4160.
Ceramic Type and Age
- Ceramic Type: This inkstand is made of earthenware. The Sarreguemines factory was a major producer of this material. While often associated with polychrome glazes, this solid-colored piece with its molded detail and rich glaze is an example of the factory’s decorative earthenware production.
- Approximate Age: The “SARREGUEMINES FRANCE” mark is a key detail for dating. The Sarreguemines factory was located in a region that was annexed by Germany after the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and marked its pieces as German. The region was returned to France after World War I, and the factory began marking its pieces “FRANCE” again. Therefore, this inkstand was likely produced after 1918.
