This is an historically significant Early American Pressed Glass (EAPG) inkwell, directly linked to a pivotal event in American history.
Description: The inkwell is crafted entirely from clear, pressed glass, meticulously molded to replicate the Administration Building of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The level of detail achieved in the pressed glass is remarkable, showcasing architectural elements like columns, windows, and the grand dome of the building. The inkwell functions as follows: the top dome section lifts off to provide access to the ink reservoir within the building’s main structure.
Markings and Historical Context: The base of the inkwell is clearly marked:
- “Libbey Glass / Toledo Ohio“: This inscription identifies the manufacturer as the Libbey Glass Company, a prominent American glassmaker.
- Each of the four square columns around the base is imprinted with one word, collectively spelling out “World”, “Columbian”, “Exposition”, and “1893“.
The historical context provided highlights the innovative marketing strategy employed by Libbey Glass at the Exposition. Unlike other exhibitors, Libbey charged admission to their pavilion, where visitors could observe the glass-making process. This fee, initially a dime and later a quarter due to popularity, could then be applied towards the purchase of glass souvenirs, of which this inkwell was a popular choice.
Significance: This inkwell is not just a functional desk accessory but also a tangible piece of American history and industrial heritage. It represents:
- Technological Advancement: A testament to the capabilities of EAPG manufacturing in the late 19th century, achieving intricate designs through pressing.
- Historical Commemoration: A souvenir from one of the most important World’s Fairs, which showcased American industry, culture, and innovation.
- Business Innovation: Reflects Libbey’s unique and successful approach to exhibition marketing.
