The most notable feature of this clear glass inkwell is the presentation inscription under the lid.

  • Glass Body: The inkwell’s body is made of pressed glass and has a multi-lobed design with a central inkwell.
  • Hinged Lid with Presentation: The circular, hinged lid is made of metal and, when opened, reveals a printed inscription. The inscription reads:

PRESENTED TO Govt L. Wilson BY EMPLOYEES, CAR DEP’T. N.W.R.R. April 4th, 1873. Chicago, Ill.

This inscription indicates that the inkwell was a presentation gift given to a “Govt L. Wilson” by the employees of the Car Department of the North Western Rail Road (N.W.R.R.) on April 4th, 1873, in Chicago, Illinois. The text is printed in a decorative script and enclosed under a protective layer.
