Revolving inkstands such as this one are often colloquially referred to as “snail inkwells” due to the distinctive shape of its reservoir.

Here’s a detailed description:

  • Porcelain Components: The inkstand features a porcelain ink reservoir, shaped like a stylized snail’s shell with a “trumpet” shaped opening (font), set upon a matching porcelain saucer base. Both the reservoir and the saucer are hand-painted with delicate florals.
  • Brass Bracket and Fittings: A brass bracket is attached to the porcelain saucer. This bracket provides a mounting for the pen rack with a stopper plate. The circular stopper plate features a molded side profile of a woman’s head. She is depicted in a classical style, with her hair styled in an updo or bun.
  • Revolving Mechanism: The “snail” reservoir is designed to pivot smoothly around two bearing points within the brass framework. Two adjustable screws fit into recesses on the snail, allowing for precise movement. When the inkwell is not in use, the “trumpet” shaped opening of the reservoir is rotated to close tightly against a stopper plate, preventing the ink from drying out or spilling. To open the inkwell for use, the snail is simply rotated until it contacts a designated stop on the base, exposing the font and making it ready for dipping.
